Description
Adware and spyware, also known as privacy invasive software are used generally for commercial purposes to gain revenue by sending information to a website about the users activity, and thus displaying targeted ads, or a malicious purpose, to gain easy access to one’s computer . Adware and spyware software are being installed and ran in the background without the user’s knowledge or consent, once a certain website is accessed or a certain program is being installed and used. Those programs are monitoring the user’s behavior, modify the user interaction with the computer, changing computer settings, install additional programs and more. All of this without the user’s knowledge or consent.
History
The term spyware was officially used in 1995 and back then used to define a software meant for espionage purposes. Nowadays are known under the more general term of commercially motivated software. In March 2007 was formed ASC – Anti Spyware Coalition that include Microsoft, Symantec, AOL, Google, Yahoo! And many more.
How do they work?
Usually a adware/spyware detector compares the scanned Windows registry files with its spyware database. If a certain entry is found, then the removal tool will try to sort a way of rendering the adware/spyware inoperable, or simply remove it. Sometimes a spyware may have more then one entries, that supplement each other – meaning that if 99 entries are deleted, but one remains behind, then the removal is a failure since the remaining one will duplicate the rest. Also, firewall applications will note if a application is requesting network access, either blocking it because of the fact that it’s not legit or permitted by the user. This is another way of tracking down spyware on one’s computer.
