The AIDE tool was useful when I was supposed to install and maintain a large number of Linux workstations. After every system install I used AIDE to take a snapshot of the system, which I could compare at a later time with a newer snapshot. This meant that if the system changed in any way, I could virtually analyze what has happened and most importantly, why. This way I could avoid various unwanted processes, like reinstalling or reconfiguring the system from scratch. Very helpful tool, and relatively easy to use.
