Debian is my distribution of choice for a server. It's got an amazing package management system, that handles dependencies, upgrades, uninstallation, etc. flawlessly. The whole distribution is developed incrementally, so doing a dist-upgrade mosly just works. Lots of things are well thought-out in Debian, like the way packages are built and distributed, bug tracking, the placement of files in the filesystem, etc. There have been many times when I saw something and thought "hey, they sure got this thing right". Debian lacks some of the other distributions' polish when it comes to the user interface. It's built by hackers for hackers, and it shows. I wouldn't reccomend Debian for a linux newbie. But if you know your way around, Debian is very flexible and well-designed.

Debian was my first choice when I decided to switch to Linux . I replaced my Windows XP with Debian a couple of months ago and the support I got was really helpful. It seems to me that Debian has the most complete support in the open source world. Also it‘s very fast and light (it works smoothly even though I have little RAM memory –KDE works super fast). All the packages I need are in the stable version so no need for hunting bugs. Although the setup requires a little more knowledge and information (for a newbie like me) the configuration is not that difficult, eth0 is always detected and Apt is immediately available with lots of lists to draw from.

An Unbiased Review of Debian 3.0 - 7.0
I'm sure you're aware that this isn't going to be glowing. Debian's installer is several years out of date, and needs a serious overhaul. It's not fit for commercial consumption, and is only good enough for established Debian users and poor wannabe PFYs like myself. This is not a sustainable situation. Apt-get is good, but RPM has caught up with it for the most part thanks to apt-rpm and urpmi. I'll take everyone's word for it and say that Debian is, for the most part, stable. I like the fact that the packagers are willing to hold back and patch existing stable software to get a decent system, and not one that seems to be in permanent beta. This is why I went for it in the first place.
Debian Etch RC1 on LinuzQuestions.org - 10.0
Pros: Stable, about 18000 (yes, eighteen thousand) packages to choose from, Cons: not the most user friendly distro out there I use the CD, as I don't have a fast connection. installation went well in both the text and the GUI install. One new feature, is everything required for a working deskop is on disk one, so that is all you need to set up a basic box.

Debian is far from perfect, but because I love her so much, and there is so much scope for development in the future I’ll give her 5 stars...
