The Civilization series of games are in a class of their own, there's nothing that comes close to them in terms of how the game is designed. I've spent many, many hours with different incarnations of CIV, starting from the original civ1 (on a black and white monitor). Freeciv brings a different take on the game, with a better thought-out implementation for things like network multiplayer play, diplomatic negociations and city management. There are problems, like a not-very-intelligent AI, but the game is amazingly fun and addictive, especially when playing with other people, over the network.
