E-mail anywhere
Gmail has raised the bar when it comes to web-based e-mail services. When it was introduced, it was a world away from competitors like Yahoo Mail and Hotmail, and its adoption rate has been huge. The interface has several nice innovations, and most of them are useful (search, displaying conversations, nifty file upload, etc). It's also friendly to power users: it allows e-mail forwarding and POP and SMTP access. The huge storage space is also a nice bonus. It does suffer from the limitations inherent in any web-based e-mail client: it doesn't integrate well with the desktop, it's only accessible when online, there's a limited upload/download speed, etc.
