I was once put in front the fact that a computer I used was terribly locked in Unix, and the password was no longer to be found. The previous owner was nowhere to be found, or not willing to share the information, and since the computer was part of a larger matrix, we had to crack it. John-the-Ripper was the only password cracker that worked its magic, and unlocked the system. Fast and reliable, I hope I won’t have to use it again – if I do have to, it’ll be without a second thought.
