De-facto database for web applications
MySQL has, over the years, become the de-facto choice when building a web site that requires database storage. This is mainly due to its extreme ease-of-use, low overhead and supportive community. Most web hosting plans offer PHP and MySQL, and this has proven to be a very useful combination for building dynamic web sites. It can be used for the simplest scripts (dumping an html form into a database) to very complex applications (CMSes, forums, e-learning portals, etc). Besides being well suited for the web, MysQL has evolved into the high-performance, high-availability market with its various storage engines, replication, and other features.
