OpenProj is a nice alternative to Microsoft Project. Actually, you'll have most of the features of MS Project... for free. Unlike Microsoft's tool, OpenProj is compatible with Linux and Mac too. Not as fast, but stable. The bad news is that even if you can import mpp files, you can't save your projects in this format. So in terms of interoperability, OpenProj is an one way street. The user interface is not really intuitive, so I imagine that it's difficult to manage large projects with this tool.
