Challenging the commercial SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security), the OpenSSL project aims to create a powerful toolkit, that besides offering an alternative to the above, will try to create a bulletproof cryptography system. Each of the third party applications included in the project will enhance the tools capabilities, and with a team of volunteers with at least 15 active members, the project seems to have a bright future ahead of it.
