It is proprietary software and closed source. Opera's lightweight mobile web browser Opera Mini and most current versions of its desktop application are offered free of charge.

General Info

Opera is an Internet browser that runs on a large variety of Operating Systems. The Opera "suite" contains a web browser, an email client, a news aggregator, a address book, an IRC client, a download manager and a Bit Torrent Client.

Opera was developed by Opera Software that has its headquarters in Oslo, Norway. Opera is the most popular web browser for smart phones, mobile platforms and PDAs as it uses the "Small Screen Rendering" technology. Opera is also used for iTV platforms. As a result of a collaboration with IBM, the Opera Browser now integrates voice recognition software.

Statistics

  • Since launched, Opera 9 was downloaded 10,000,000 times
  • Opera Mobile for mobile platforms was distributed on 40,000,000 devices, 50 different phone models
  • More than 3,000,000 people downloaded Opera Mobile this year
  • There are 5,000,000 users of Opera Mini all over the world

Versions

The latest version, Opera 9, includes a simple Bit Torrent client, a pop-up blocker, tabs, a WYSIWYG editor and widgets that run in separate windows.
