The Solaris
Solaris is a computer operating system certified against the Single Unix Specification as a version of Unix, and although historically a closed-source project, it has been released as open-sourced by Sun Microsystems. Solaris has a reputation for being well-suited to symmetric multiprocessing, undertaking a large number of CPUs. It has been tightly integrated with Sun's SPARC hardware, with which it is designed and marketed as a combined package, and has fortunately included support for 64-bit SPARC applications since Solaris 7. After this, the system became more reliable, but at a cost premium over commodity PC hardware. Nevertheless, it has also supported x86 systems since Solaris 2.1 and the latest version of the software, Solaris 10, specifically designed with AMD64 in focus, allowing Sun to capitalize on the availability of a much more accessible 64-bit CPUs.
