Out of the Linux distos I've ever used, Ubuntu is by far the easiest to comprehend and adapt to your desires. It's thoroughly documented and after searching on ubuntuforums.org or ubuntuguide.org you'll be able to solve all your problems. Unfortunately, it seems that the newest version, Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty, raises a lot of problems relates to installing the nvidia graphic drivers, problems that seemed to have been partially solved in the previous version(6.10 Edgy). In conclusion, Ubuntu is one of the most appropriate Linux distos to get you started in "the ways" of Linux operating systems.
