Ubuntu & U
Out of the Linux distos I've ever used, Ubuntu is by far the easiest to comprehend and adapt to your desires. It's thoroughly documented and after searching on ubuntuforums.org or ubuntuguide.org you'll be able to solve all your problems. Unfortunately, it seems that the newest version, Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty, raises a lot of problems relates to installing the nvidia graphic drivers, problems that seemed to have been partially solved in the previous version(6.10 Edgy). In conclusion, Ubuntu is one of the most appropriate Linux distos to get you started in "the ways" of Linux operating systems.

A Pleasure to Use
Ubuntu finally makes Linux easy. It's based on Debian, and inherits its rock solid package management systems and quailty software. What makes it a special distribution is attention to detail. There's only one CD per architecture, it functions as a LiveCD and installation. The interface is beautiful and, as any mac user will tell you, the visual interface is very important. Installing software is a breeze - just open up a simple utility, tell it what programs you want, and it installs them for you. The community around Ubuntu is great, lots of people contributing informal support, documentation, and not least of all, lots and lots of well-built packages that are not part of the standard (and rather small) distro.

Ease of use
This is a very good Linux distribution for beginners It has a simple install procedure and contains everything you need out of the box. The package management system is solid and easy to use. The visual interface is clean, intuitive and efficient (it uses Gnome). On the downside I did have problems installing it on my laptop. But the community was very helpful. I found walk-throughs that helped to solve my problems.

Ubuntu makes Linux easier
Ubuntu and its distributions make Linux easier to install and use. For me, Ubuntu is one of the best Linux operating systems.

Getting there...
Ubuntu is meant to be "linux for humans". I've used kubuntu, the KDE version of ubuntu. It's definitely a big improvement from other linux distributions, but it's still pretty far from your grandmother's operating system. Installing programs still require all sorts of tricks, and of course there is still a big issue of driver compatibility for HW devices, even of more is done on this everyday. Overall, more work needed to get to Mark Shuttleworth's goal of the OS for the rest of us...

humanity for others
“humanity for others” that what Ubuntu is all about. 6.10 or edgy continued to amaze me –it was a breeze to upgrade from 6.06. I like the “Upstart” init daemon because it makes the system boot faster. Both Evolution and Firefox have been upgraded. The desktop graphics are improved but pretty much the same. I expected much more efforts for the 3D effects (everybody’s having them) but it seems that Ubuntu didn’t care bout them at all. Still, the brownish color is not trying to reproduce any Windows theme. I’m happy that as with 6.06, I had no problems with hardware recognitions. Unfortunately, like it happens to any Linux distribution, I couldn’t make the driver for the wireless work

Ubuntu 6.10 'Edgy Eft' review - 8.0
While still far from perfect, Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy Eft" is both an improvement over the so-called "long-term support" release and a decent operating system in its own right. It's in a much better place than any other free-of-charge operating system has been before now, but I don't think it'll give any commercial operating systems a run for their money.

Ubuntu - 1.0
