Simple Machine Forums (SMF) is free server software for hosting a user forum. SMF was launched in 2004 and seems to be rapidly gaining popularity as a forum platform and now is available in 21 languages. Its plug-in and theme system offer a fresh and effective approach. Although for the most part it's easy and manageable even for a newbie, advanced configuration and customization still requires at least intermediate knowledge of web programming (PHP, CSS, HTML). Overall, I would say that Simple Machine Forum is the best alternative to vBulletin.
