Apache2 is a efficient and extensible server that works both under UNIX or Windows systems. I install the Apache server on my personal PC, running Windows, alongside with MySql and PHP and it works very well.

I use it at work under Win XP SP2 and at home under Debian testing. Smooth as can be.

Apache/2 fulfills the very most requirements to a Web server, among other things listings can be provided with password protection (“basic Auth”), server Side Includes can be used and a matured cgi system permit the use of OS/2 REXX CMD files from cgi Scripts. Using the Perl5-Umgebung (perl502b.zip) also the execution of genuine Perl Scripten (“*.pl, *.cgi”) is exactly the same as possible under Unix systems. A further important feature by Apache/2 is to be defined the simple possibility so-called “Virtual of host”, thus several virtual Web servers on different IP numbers or host names and/or URLs.

Apache2 is a reliable, powerful web server. I've used it as packaged in the Debian linux distribution and it has been a pleasure to administer it. Apache is rock solid, fast, configurable, and built in a clean, logical way. Configuring virtual hosts is a breeze, and using its modules, one can perform all sorts of operations on HTTP requests: compression, caching, URL rewriting, proxying, redirecting, modifying headers, and much more. Options can be set on a per-directory basis and can be overridden by .htacces files (disabled by default).
