I was surprised to find that the freely available bzip2 data compressor would normally compress files to within 15% of the best techniques. Also, proved to be almost twice as fast at compressing, and six times faster for decompressing. This sums up most of the reasons you’d want to use it: compresses and decompresses fast, and sums up more data into a single package. You can add more stuff to your distribution disks, and make sure that the network traffic for downloading packages is also reduced. It runs on any 32 or 64 bit machine, requiring only an ANSI C compiler, and the complete distribution should compile unmodified on any UNIX or Win32 system. So, what can I say, join the club, and start using it.
