First of all, the user will need to have a valid account on the NT system. Also, there is no need to know the old password in order to set a new one. That’s when chntpw comes in and does the trick for you. This little tool is easy to use and install, it will work offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppydisk or CD. Another neat feature, it will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts. While working with it, I discovered that it’s also an almost fully functional registry editor. Interesting and fancy tool.
