Noflushd will spin down the disks that have not been used after a certain amount of time. It then prevents the disk writes to start spinning them again. It can be used with kernel version starting with 2.2.11, and up, only if the userland bdflush daemon has bee updated, and has been fully integrated in the new kernel thread. Unfortunately, it still has plenty of bugs, or so called limitations, among the worse being the incompatibility with the the format of /proc/stat, noflushd versions starting from 2.3 will not work on kernels from 2.3.99pre8 to 2.4.0-test8. As these kernels are experimental and obsolete anyway, no attempt will be made to fix this problem. Earlier versions of noflushd will cease to work on kernels 2.4.0-test9 and up. The general recommendation is that you update. Also, I’d say it’s hard to install and operate, needing a certain amount of skill – you wouldn’t want to catch your fingers in it.
