vBulletin is surprisingly stable, I have never experienced any problems with it. Functionality it great, support is excellent. What I love about it is that you can configure every forum and make it unique and that you can set an unlimited number of moderators. If you're having troubles they even offer optional professional installation (for a fee). It's a great tool for any webmaster but... there's a draw back: the price (160$ plus 30$/year renewal). It's not open source and that makes vB the next best thing after phpBB. Also, it was designed for large communities so if you need a forum for a small group I would advise you pick something different.
