If it weren't for the price, vBulletin would be the best out there. Right now any user could get the same features for free by using phpBB. Even so, vBulletin holds a high position because of the technical support and the comprehensive admin and user control panels.

vBulletin is commonly used to create interactive communities on a big scale. Although there are many steps required to install vBulletin, the installation process couldn't really be simpler. The administration control panel has the greatest number of options of any admin panel I've ever seen! i liked that you can configure that homepage to show extra statistics such as Database Data Disk Usage, Unique Registered Visitors Today and Custom Profile Picture Disk Usage. Anyway, everything can be configured from that control panel from colors, templating, moderation tasks, user rights, number of posts and many others. On my option vBulletin disserves every single cent!

vBulletin is surprisingly stable, I have never experienced any problems with it. Functionality it great, support is excellent. What I love about it is that you can configure every forum and make it unique and that you can set an unlimited number of moderators. If you're having troubles they even offer optional professional installation (for a fee). It's a great tool for any webmaster but... there's a draw back: the price (160$ plus 30$/year renewal). It's not open source and that makes vB the next best thing after phpBB. Also, it was designed for large communities so if you need a forum for a small group I would advise you pick something different.

I like it but why pay for software when you can get the same functionality and performance and a better support form an Open Source project (I'm talking about phpBB).

vBulletin surely is feature-packed, but be prepared to upgrade your servers. This thing is extremely resource-hungry!

I choose commercial software over open source software because I don't have to worry about support or documentation. The software I get to use is secure and fully functional and I never end up discovering bugs since a team of professional already tested the product. vBulletin is a great commercial product and I don't think there's another one that can top it.
