Vuurmuur is a neat tool, aimed at the system administrator that needs a decent firewall, but does not have netfilter specific knowledge. This part of the Vuurmuur description caught my eye, and since I’m one of the less experienced ones, I gave it a try. I can say that I found it relatively easy to install and use. It’s made of 3 parts, one for the middle end, which will convert understandable rules, hosts, groups, networks, zones, interfaces and services into an iptables rule-set. The second piece of the puzzle will convert the netfiler logs into a readable one, which will reflect the objects I named above. The last, but not the least part, is a Ncurses-based Gui (the front-end) in which one can manage the firewall. Most important here is the real-time feedback. Logs can be viewed in real-time, using colors for easy interpretation. Vuurmuur does what it was designed to, and does it good.
